I'm curious what tools (software) you used to design this! I'm wanting to design something similar, but am just starting to learn FreeCAD...

This model was made from a picture off the internet. Its a height map, made using a picture drawn, or painted with shades of gray. The darker the color, the higher the image will extrude. I use a free software app called BMP2IGES. Its a German program in English. You could also use Microsofts 3d builder which is free with win 10. I used Paint.net to convert the pic to black and white, re-traced the outlines in black, used a soft blur on the image to insure a smooth model. Bmp2iges will convert the image into an STL and save. I then used Netfabb studio free to cut the image from its background. I then usually import the model into Repetier so I can see it on the print bed, then re-size it for printing...All the items I have created, I just used different free software packages to do different things to the STL's.

Thanks for your detailed response! That gives me a few avenues to pursue. Cheers!
