wondering the pvc size that your auger fits into.

Is the cat at risk of having the laser point at its eye?

I put the laser in a corner so that couldn't happen

What a neat design! You mention an agitator in the video - to prevent the kibble from getting clogged as it's making its way down from the hopper into the auger. Can you provide more details about the agitator?

it's another hobby servo mounted on the angled hopper bed. You can see the butt end of it sticking out if you look at the first photo. It just turns back and forth to keep things moving whenever the auger is turning.

Hey, any chance you could tell us what servo you used?

Hi there! If your split auger ever happens to break or require reprinting, might I humbly suggest my OpenSCAD auger library? It prints vertically - you get to customize the overhang angle your printer is capable of, and much more. Works like a charm! http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:96462http://www.thingiverse.com/thi...

Looks nice! Just one thing: If you have a visible laser, and the cat goes in there with its head (I assume your cat has eyes on its head), don't you think it is at risk of getting the laser in the eyes? Even low-power lasers can do damage when looked at directly, I just assume that also counts for cats. Or is it only on for a short time to check the level periodically every few minutes? That would also save energy.

Excellent comment. Yes it is Something I considered. I mounted the laser very low So that it would be impossible for it to shine in his eyes. That, why the dispenser fills multiple times per day in small volumes.

So I have the entire cat feeder finished and working great, but haven't had time to take videos or anything. I'll post ASAP with the finished product and perhaps upload some updated design files.

Well you've had time to use it. Or - er - the cat has. Any complaints?

No complaints yet, :)

Great idea splitting it in half! I uploaded a parametric screw thing designed in OpenSCAD awhile ago, but it never occurred to me splitting the model in two for printing would make it easier :-E

Also, that render picture totally looks like the generators on Hoth in Star Wars

You're right!!!!

Time for a hoth rebel base model.

"Imperial troops have entered the base!" =-O

Why couldnt you print it vertically?

That might be possible, but I think the plane angles are a little sharp

Cool. You could print one diagonally that is a bit larger, or if you interlace them on the print bed and make them diagonal you might be able to print both without removing the wiper.

For glue, there is a clear multi-purpose ABS+PVC+CPCV available in the plumbing section of Home Depot ( Oatey #30821 ). It is solvent based so it makes a super strong bond.

I can't wait to see the rest of the project :)

Hey, yeah I never even thought of using PVC cement. What a great idea!

Nice, if I didn't have an automated feeder already for my fish tank, I think I'd have to make one with something like this...
