Could you design the middle part you clip with the other a bit thicker? can't make it smaller due to the very thin walls.

I've made two of these so far and they've broken both times while removing them from the print bed.

I have made 4 of these so far and all have worked fine. Printing on XYZ AiO using PLA. Would like to see the parts closer to 2 mm thick.

Great design, thank you!

Scaled it to 140% (fit the max print volume for my printer) for a spool to hold about 60 feed to CAT5e cable
Scaled it to 133% to make a perfect size spool for using in my M3D Micro printer (under-bed spool)

Was worried I was going to break it the first time I assembled the two parts but once I did it then it made sense how it snaps together at the end. I've made about 5 of these so far, and no problems snapping any of them together (despite the way it "feels" like it might break, but it never does). All prints were in PLA.

this design was too thin. struggled to get the parts together without breaking the two halves. Printed in ABS with .2 layer height.
The one that survived the attachment process feels very flimsy. Now using a remixed version and seems to work well.

This is a great design. I made a bunch for our technology center. We have micro USBs and USB extension cables that tend to "migrate." I hope that putting them on colorful reels will remind people to put them back after using!

The 2 sides fit together nicely. Holds cables well!

Hi, run your files through makeprintable.com , for some reason Simplify3D was making an additional layer. Fun design.

Printed quite a few of these!! Really loving them!!

It would be nice if it were in a printable orientation.

What you need to do to easily modify or create STL files is to open a account
with a program called -tinkercad- it is free and cloud based
(nothing loads on your computer) you simply have to sign up.
It is basically like Legos for CAD/CAM and very easy to use.
You can make things from scratch ,or load 3-D files and modify them.
everything I've posted on site was made with it.

So.. if you took off the two alignment "tabs" (parallel to the center axis), but left the (tongue and groove?) concentric things - you could pull one end of the cord to "unreel" it- and then twist one side of the reel to wind the cord back up.

I can't convert STL files so I can modify them - but if my lingo isn't too cryptic can anyone check me on that thought?

I printed one - and am going to try to cut the tabs out.

Added smaller (lower resolution) STL files.

The question still remains is how you to begin with thought 80+ meg files would be useful to anyone and then moreover how the editors of this site gave you a pass on that and featured it. For a simple spool no less. Mind you, this is not a family collection of hi res Tolkien dragons. Sorry to be so harsh and I know you mean well and are contributing, but still.

"can't be that big, there are several ~3mb files which I can print without any problems"
175 mb combined

File is very large indeed.
Just upload it to netfabb (www.netfabb.azurewebsites.com) I believe and get a really tiny and if needed, fixed .STL file. Or download netfabb basic and repair offline. I'm away from my computer right now, but if some one doesn't beat me to it, I will upload a smaller file.

it is crashing slic3r... i got part B to output gcode but not part A

This file is way too big! It is causing errors in matter control! Please make a smaller file

Are you kidding me with these STL file sizes? Grats on getting featured and all but dumping a solid works design out to an 83 meg STL file is not all that impressive, in fact, it is exactly the opposite , and yet the editors choose to feature it, like this is best practice or something. Now I will have to remix this and do it in 500 bytes of openscad code just to prove a point, sheesh

Can you please post the link of your remix version please?

Its crashing matter control for me!
