Would you say print this vertically (I'm assuming with supports) or horizontally?

Horizontally, like the first image, you could print different colours for the different layers, making the effect of land and ocean; but the altitud (Z) resolution will be limited by the height of the layer (usually 0.2 or 0.3mm), and the print will loose details because of layers have discrete values. By placing "vertically", with the latitudes in Z, you will probably need support, and the latitudes will have the same limitation but it will be less perceptible. In longitude and altitude (X and Y) the resolution is not limited to discrete values, so it will be more detailed.
