Apologies if this is a stupid question but, would you be able to print out a mount for the stepper instead of the Basaraba kit?
Something like this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3369418, Thanks.

ENDER 3 / CR-10 Direct Extrusion Mount

Hi HiccupHater, I have just uploaded my version of the mount with a Hero Me Remix. Best Boothy

Direct Drive & Hero Me Remix 4 for Ender 3 & CR10S

BoothyBoothy, Wow didn't expect such a extensive write up and well made mounting, I'm sure the community and myself will really appericate this design, as well as that you finally kicked my ass into gear, and I've writing a 'make' of the original remix and once my bolt order arrives I'll be sure to mount the new direct drive and try that out. Thanks for all your work.

Its a pleasure, I enjoyed designing it, I hope it works for you. Best Boothy

Hi Hiccuphater, not a stupid question at all, Hmmm I will look this. To be honest I have been considering a DIY alternative to the Basaraba Direct Drive kit myself for a while now. I found the Basaraba Direct Drive works great on my heavily braced CR10S but due to the increased weight to the print head just reduced print quality on an Ender 3 Pro & my Ender 5. I will definitely consider this, I like the idea of the stepper side mounted. Much better balance of weight. Leave this with me to investigate further, I will contact you if I get anywhere with this. Best Boothy

Wow, thanks for the insanely quick reply, I'm really excited for this design and wish it was more popular, the Hero me is a already great design and this just fixes all my problems with it, I'll be sure to send a tip your way in the following week. Anyway, The Basaraba is a great kit, but I'm only looking for the mount and it's $25 for a glorified piece of aluminum and that's well pricey, doesn't help with me living all the down under. If you don't mind please keep me updated on the state of the DIY mount as I'm eagerly waiting to print this design and don't want to reprint everything if i have too.
Thanks.

Scrap that previous comment, it will not work. The side right side retention groove will conflict.Best Boothy

Hi Hiccuphater Theoretically the version below of the duct should work now but I am looking at both making the bracket a little more robust and revising the cable management of my duct. Best Boothy

Hero Me Remix 2 with Robust Assembly & Extended Wire Management

Hi, The Basaraba kit is not a bad price for what is small batch prototype production, we are all too used to Chinese mass manufacture pricing. I must admit generally I am very cool with Boden systems, they have issues with some filaments but most of those I use once in a blue moon. Certainly the reduced weight to the extruder can make a big difference in print quality which mostly concerns moi. I find these things more a challenge than anything. The Basaraba kit does include a stepper motor extension cable (again appears small batch \home brew) but is useful. I have struggled to find a stepper extension cable any where.I am printing the original thing as I write. The concept is very good lets see if we can improve the implementation, no gaurantees. Best Boothy

Hi Boothy, you're right, I've never thought of it like that, I'm so used too mass produced Aliexepress goods that anything more than $15 seems pricey. In reality $25 dollars for such a niche product really isn't asking for much, the extension cable alone costs 10 bucks with shipping costs.
For me personally I'm looking towards direct drive because of the, reduction too stringing, improved print times (With less retractions) and really just because it looks cool, I really like the industrial, no thrills look of it. Anyway I just wanted to confirm if I wanted to test out the direct drive with DIY mount I would need,
Base_Ender3_Pro_Cr10_V2.stl (The one you recently posted with the mounting holes moved to align with...
Stock_Direct_Extrusion.stl (The page I originally linked too)
And then what ever combination of Fan Ducts and auto bed leveling solutions we want.
Thanks for your patience.

Hi HiccupHater,

Neither of my Hero Me Duct remix versions (or most others)will fit the direct drive bracket you linked at the moment. Although the author wants it to fit all ducts there is a specific conflict with the Hero Me type duct base. The Hero me duct has a slot\rib on the right hand side which wraps around the Ender 3 mounting Plate from the top (not just my version all versions except the Ender 5 version which will not fit properly either - they may be some I have missed).

Therefore you cannot slot the duct base in on over the top of the Hot End as per stock because the new direct drive bracket is in the way and the direct drive bracket needs to be located first to fix the roller bolts before the duct base is applied, 100% chicken & egg!.

Also my direct drive version has completely different fixing points which are much too high at present and a good 10 mm would have to chopped off the top to clear - I think that's a no go at this time.

I am currently working on a new version when I can but if you cannot wait you would be better using the base duct from the link below but you will have to remove the right hand retention rib (or use the Ender 5 base) which will not make the assembly that rigid due to reduced location\fixing but should be sufficient for testing purposes.

My new version will have a bolt into the right side of the direct drive bracket instead of a slot so can be face fixed. An additional fix point so the Duct base helps the rigidity of the stepper motor mounting plate. I have already designed and printed a remix of the thing with a few tweaks to make the mounting plate much more rigid. I need to work a lot more on the cable management for the base duct which will make or break it.

I hope that makes sense. Best Boothy

Hero Me Remix 2 with Robust Assembly & Extended Wire Management

Ahh, thanks for that, makes much more sense now. What I'm gonna do now is print the original remix (non direct drive)
So once you post the direct drive DIY mounting bracket I'll print that and any other pieces required with the added bonus of better overhangs and general print quality because I'm printing with your improved duct instead of the stock pathetic 4014 fan.
And because this design is so modular, there's really no harm in reprinting one or two pieces again, if anything it just means I have spares.

Thanks so much for the amount of effort you're putting into this, I really do appreciate it means a lot to me. I'll be sure to upload my 'make' and tip you once I get the chance

Its getting there !(see attached WIP images) Only 5015 fans at the moment though, I need to change the 4010 duct again (sigh!) to angle it to clear the Stepper Motor and provide room for the cables- one thing at a time need to investigate further with the 4010 ducts. Best Boothy

Wow that looks so slick and compact, I just actually finished building the stock hero me remix, don't have time to do a make right now but I'll do it later today.

The makes more important than the tip !

Also, do not get me wrong about direct drives, they can be far superior to Bowden its just when I have tried converting Bowden machines to Direct Drive in the past, due to the inherent frame design, the additional weight causes fundamental noise within the prints which cannot be shifted. I have done this 3 times now and have also reverted back to Bowden. Even my direct drive Wanhau I3 prints really fast but the print quality is no where near my 2 Ender 3 Pros or my Ender 5. I am happy to be proven wrong at any time though, hence looking at this thing. Best Boothy

Hi.
Where did you buy that cable extension for the stepped motor?
Thanks in advance

Hi, sorry for late response (must of missed when on holiday). The extension cable came with the upgrade kit (ebay).

Can't download. Seems to be broken on thingiverse. May need to re-upload?

I have just re-uploaded and problem still exist, definitely Thingiverse. It appears that you can download individual files Ok if required asap. Its 11.45pm in the UK so will check again in the morning when able. Best Boothy

Yes there seems to be a problem at the moment but the thing as already been downloaded 300 + times so probably thingiverse overloading on the weekend. Its been really buggy lately more than usual. I will re-upload tomorrow morning Greenwich meantime if problem still occurs. Please try later if able. Best Boothy

I have downloaded other files, but yours has an error which says that no such key exists'

Arrrgh ! After spending an hour this morning trying to resolve I had noticed I had 2 forward slashes in the title description. I removed those and now everything works fine ! Thingiverse really needs to get their act together with symbol usage and format in the html or at least have warning tips if conflicting content is present. Formatting text currently in the Create dialogue is rubbish, anyway. sorted. Best Boothy

Have you tried publishing anything ? There is clearly a problem with creating a thing. I have tried re creating several times with the same results. I even get someone else previous copy in the description when first opening the create dialogue. You can still download the files individually. To date I have created\upload 72 things and have only had 1 issue previously which again was thingiverse related Do not know what else to suggest at this time. I have also tried reducing files and 3 different browsers. I cannot even delete previous attaempts. There is no point me endlessly creating new things with the same result. I have contacted Thingiverse.

Same here, other stuff works, just not this one.
