So what happens when you use the excluder and they try to swarm? Does the swarm follow the queen out, so it never happens? You could not leave it on all the time due to cleaning problems, but if you saw queen cells might prevent one before you split it. Or if you had a swarm detector you could go turn to the excluder position that day.

You may be able to delay a swarm with the disc, but it will eventually swarm if you don't give them space or split. To be honest I have never used the disc that way, but the swarm would return if the queen does not go out with them. I have seen this happen several times. When I get swarm cells I try to use them in splits. Swarm cells make excellent queens since the bees have time to use the best larvae.

Curious - what size entrance hole do you drill in your nuc box? is 1" too big for these discs?

For the largest disc, I used a 1 1/2" (38mm) bit to bore the hole. For the large disc with the smaller hole you can use a 1 1/4" (32 mm) hole and for the small disc you can use a 15/16" (24mm) hole. The hole size is not critical and you can use smaller hole based on preference.
