I was looking for fidget toys to print, when I came across this one:
Star hinge fidget toy by chkno. I downloaded the 8-pointed start and printed it out. But it was fused together, and breaking it apart didn't work out well.
So I got to thinking that I could create something similar, but in a snap together version.
There are two types of arms. One has one peg and two holes, and one has two pegs and one hole. Each arm comes in 5, 6, 7, and 8 pointed varieties. You have to print out 1 of each arm for each point you want.
If, for example, you're a huge Game Of Thrones fan, and you want the 7 pointed start, you would print out 7 Arm1-7, and 7 Arm2-7.
Once printed, they snap together easily, following the pictures here for guidance. (It always takes me a few minutes of comparing the picture to the parts I have in hand to put one together.)
I printed the 8 pointed star and the 7 pointed star in some MatterHacker's Premium PLA, and the parts snapped together with no problem. I printed the 5 pointed star in some generic PLA, and the pegs broke every time I tried to snap them together. I'm not sure if it's the design, or the PLA. Let me know in the comments how you get along with your prints.
EDIT: I beefed up the pegs a little so they are less likely to break. And I added arms for 9, 10, 11, and 12 pointed stars.
EDIT: My son asked me if I could make a four pointed star using this design, and then he challenged me to do a three pointed star. They work, but there isn't much play in them, and the four pointed start looks a little like a very offensive symbol. But I'm adding the three and four pointed star arms as well.
