I am just curious how people find these for keeping spools dry? I think that the position of this container inside the spool is wrong because the majority of the container surface is covered with plastic spool roll, is it enough space there for air circulation?


Do you know how much gel this will hold?

These are great gel holders. I didn't get the gel that you specified in the details (I went for the orange beads to avoid the cobolt and match my Prusa printer), and unfortunately some of them are small enough to slip through the top (they are spec'ed at 2-5mm). The smaller beads also slip through the bottom, but the hygrometer blocks those from running away. ;-) I cut out a circle of coffee filter paper to sit just inside the lid to keep the smaller gel beads corralled so I don't have an issue with that part of the design as-is.

I do have a request for a slightly modified gel holder, specifically one that is about 45mm to 46mm tall (about 20mm shorter) with the existing lid screwed on. The reason for this is to fit some Polyalchemy Elixer spools that I have so I can put the spools back inside the retail box for storage. These spools are a bit thinner than normal. I've checked the diameter and the existing design fits, but the spools are only about 48mm thick. With the hygrometer sitting about 2mm proud of the gel holder, that only leaves 46mm (45mm adds tolerance) for the gel holder.

I was considering scaling the existing model in only the z-axis, but that would shorten the recess for the hygrometer (potentially making it more proud, and I don't want it's ego to get inflated (lol)), and I would also have to print lids to fit the scaled thread. I'd rather keep the lids interchangeable.



I want to make some changes to the model to make this easier to mass produce, as I currently need to print a ton of these. Could you either release the project files or send me a pm with them?

Great idea, I love the concept! I've been using the packets of Blue Silica Gel and they've been turning pink after a few weeks, so I've been looking for another solution. It's really cool watching the humidity go down in the filament bag until it stabilizes.

I printed one and tested it with an appropriately sized hygrometer I bought on Amazon, now I ordered a bunch off Ali Express for all my spools.

I ended up buying the 2.5 pound bag of Silica Gel, rather than the bin, It should still be more than enough.

Glad it worked out well for you, I started out with the packets as well but I like this system much better

How thick is the mesh or the wall. I tried other model before but it breaks when dropped because the wall is thin.

Add more perimeters to help with that, sometimes having just 1 or 2 perimeters is not enough.

I did not intentionally thicken the walls but I have dropped mine before without a break and I feel they are fairly durable.

Very nice model! I have my filaments in dry boxes and use old-fashioned socks to hold some silica, but this makes a lot more sense. :)
Do you have any plans to make a version without the space for the hygrometer, so that the bottom is flat and can be printed without supports just like the cap?
