Have you done any experiments with dual extrusion, using TPU for the living hinges, and something harder for the rest?

I found that TPU doesn't adhere very well to PLA and other materials, so you have to design a sort of slot to hold the TPU hinge in place so you are not relying on layer adhesion. I hate dual extrusion so didn't pursue the idea much further.

As shown in the photo of the purple prototype, we've done a flexible layer (using a flexible filament) for the bottom few layers, then doing a more rigid material like PLA in the sections where you don't want movement (the purple part). It looks like that .stl wasn't uploaded. I'll try to get it uploaded in the next few days.

Pretty neat thing here! I printed the one in the pic holding the lego cube and it functions perfectly.
It's very interesting in the way it works when you get thinking about it.

Glad it worked out for you!

The little square tabs on the sides, what are they for? Do we remove them? I don't see them in the video or the photo.

They are meant to provide a larger surface area for your fingers. Yes, sometimes they break off but that's okay because they don't change the motion of the mechanism.
