I'm tempted to try with flexible filament to see if it will still leak

Does the base alone hold liquid? That is, are the only places that leak the seams? If so, there should be some sort of food-safe silicone you can apply between the seams. Or if you can do two-material printing, keeping the rigid cups but putting a flexible material around them would probably be the best.

Would make a nice flower pot also.

I wonder how it would work with flexible filament. It's also likely to hold water using flexible filament.

I've seen those cups for sale, I bet it would work. It would be a good application to use a regular filament for the walls and flexible filament for the expanding parts.

How about making it leak on purpose ... like a colander for salad?

I never thought of that!

cups can also hold solids like crackers so there is your use for it

That's true! I thought about making one the size of a bowl.

i use a PLA filament printing on mk3s...it doesnt collapse after print...i shrink the model to 80%...is that the reason?
maybe to use a differnt print setting

80% could be the issue, there would not be enough thickness for two shells. Or it could be from a retraction setting.
