After trying some "Fang" designs and finding them not stable, swinging and prone to loosening the hot-end, I decided to make my own design. Main objective was to keep the nozzle visible, as that is my main gripe with the original CR-10 design.
The 2 fans are placed on each side, keeping the front relatively open and accessible.
Best printed on it's back, with supports.
This cooling cap rests on the right side on the hot-end bracket and is fixed with 1 screw on the left (an original screw)
I printed this in ABS but it will do well in PLA, I think.
The heat-brake fan is mounted so that the air is sucked OUT from the cap, the heatbrake is also completely free and has no contact to the cap.
The new V2 version has the 2 fans angled at 30 degrees. This is to avoid the resonance sound when doing fast moves on the X-axis, where the part-cooling fan starts to vibrate in its bearing. While harmless that was annoying and this leans the fan outwards so it is less likely to vibrate.
I did the same with the heat sink fan, that is now pushing the warm air up instead of partly into the print.
The downside is now that the one screw that was used is now behind this heatsink fan and in order to remove it, the fan has to be removed first.... I will think of a better way to do this.
The mounting is also slightly different: I screwed an M3 screw in from the BACK of the plate and in order to do that you need to remove one top and the bottom roller, so you can wiggle the plate off the X-gantry and tilt forwards. Then screw a M3 in the hole and it must stick out only 2 or 3mm on the front.
Replace the Hot end plate on the gantry, mount the rollers again and adjust for proper friction.
The left fan must be off the head at this time, place the cap over the hot end and make sure the hole goes over the M3 sticking out.
Then mount the fan in place.
I printed this upright, % infill, with supports (starting at 65 degrees). That gives in my opinion the cleanest outside surface.
Total weight around 35 grams.
Keep the infill as low as possible to reduce the weight, it is already much lighter than the original metal cap, but everything helps!
