To keep them lasting longer wouldn't it be better to washing in cold/warm water and let them air dry?

Cool. This is a fun idea.
OK, challenge time: can you make more structural parts that bond to fabric? For example, things like grommets and loops, could be useful to secure earbud cables on your clothes when your exercising. To really ramp it, what about a tougher applications like protective pads fused into cloth or a Go Pro mount fused into a cap.

Sounds like any functional piece might need to have a previously printed backing piece behind the cloth while the functional piece is being printed on the front. Personally I think a functional piece should be printed separately and then sewn onto the shirt in a place which blends into the 3D printed design printed directly onto the shirt.

Wow, never thought about doing that, but it might be a little uncomfortable. It would probably work with anything that has a flat bottom, that is if it adheres to the fabric.
