Customizable Snowflake Doorstop
More than just decoration - design and function combined
You can adjust the diameter, thickness, and arms in the Customizer to perfectly fit to your home.
This Thing was designed in the frame of the BlocksCAD-Snowflake-Challenge.
BlocksCAD is a free online platform that makes it easy for students of all ages to dive right in to coding, CAD, and creating using a blocks-based interface.
Have also a look at the basic snowflake: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2757162
Easy to print with standard settings.
The quality of the top surface depends mainly on the z-resolution.
0.2 mm is a goor compromise between printing time and quality.
By increasing it to 0.3 can speed up printing a lot but the steps will get more visible.
To use the doorstop on a carpeted floor no further rework is required.
On even surfaces like tiles, wood or vinyl I recommend to add rubber stoppers or corc on the underside of the part to avoid sliding.
After designing the first "basic" snowflake using BolocsCAD I thought about what a practical use of an snowflake shaped part could be. So I came to the idea of an snowflake shaped doorstop. It is perfectly combining functionality and design.
Design process in BlocksCAD
Using "difference" and "intersection" blocks
BlocsCAD difference block
BlocksCAD intersection block
Step by step tutorial
Step 1: Creating one arm
Step 2: Rotate and duplicate arm
Step 3: Create inner profile
Step 4: Combine inner and outer profile with difference block
Step 5: Create doorstop profile
Step 6: Combine snowflake with doorstop profile using intersection block
Overview and Background
The aim of this session is to develop basic coding and CAD skills using BlocksCAD.
Lesson Plan and Activity
- Snowflakes in nature (Different structures and how they form)
- Design snowflake in BlocksCAD
- Print snowflake (if printer available)
