UPDATE: 1/28/2018 - Added feature to prevent mid-point deflection when using the middle zip-tie mount option. This new design supercedes the original.
I developed these leg extensions for my DJI Phantom 3 to help with a drop mechanism (coming soon :) ). They provide ~135mm lift (depending on leg positioning) and can be used to provide extra ground clearance for takeoff/landing with payloads or when landing in tall, grassy areas without affecting the gimbal.
Print two of these extensions and attach using one or more zip ties (three zip tie locations are provided for each extension). Then, position/shape each leg using hot air from a heat gun or hot air rework station (see details below).
I designed this for a Phantom 3. But, it may also fit a Phantom 1, 2, or 4. The payload capacity for a Phantom 3 is just over 2 pounds (907 grams). So far, I have used these extensions with the applications shown:
- Water Balloon drop mechanism - development completed, just finalizing files before publishing. The water balloon shown weighs about 1/2 pound. When dropped from 400 feet, it hits the ground going over 100 miles per hour and leaves a small crater.

Shaping - Leg positioning
After attaching the extensions to your drone, flip the drone upside-down and gently shape the extensions using hot air from a heat gun. In the pictures shown, hot air (set to 250C for PLA) from a soldering rework station was used to gently heat around the base of each extension leg until it was soft enough to tilt slightly into final position. Hold the leg in place until the plastic cools.
