interesting idea, components are surprisingly low cost ... however, if there is plastic residue on the nozzle, it would need to be complete cleaned off prior to running a Z probing routine ... but then, if wanting a low tolerance variation system which can Z probe directly off nozzle tip and work after changing out the hot end / nozzle, then the nozzle needs to be cleaned ... so, add a cleaning system (i.e. a wire brush head off to the side which is scrubbed on by nozzle after first warming hot end to about 1/2 operating temp).

After printing 10 mm, the plastic is retracted and the nozzle must be clean for printing.
But during the calibration the nozzle heats up, and the plastic starts to flow, I think it should be calibrated on a cold, clean nozzle.
Currently, I'm trying to use the sensor as a Z-endstop with a table aligned by "normal" methods.
