*Update - Added Tray_Short_v5 file which is 5mm taller. This one fits the short bins tighter.
Magnetic Storage Tray for Gaming Miniatures
I designed these trays for my own personal storage solution for Descent 2nd edition miniatures. There is a short version and a tall version. They require .25" x .125" magnets in the trays, and I used .25" x .0625" magnets in the bottom of the miniatures. After putting magnets in the tray, I glued .125" cork to the bottom of the tray. I used a router/router table to route a slot in the bottom of the miniature for the magnet to fit up inside. I used 5 minute epoxy to seal the magnet to the bottom of the miniature. The tray side-supports serve two purposes. First, they act as a handle to remove the tray from the bin. Second, they are the exact height of the inside of the bin with the lid on. If the bin gets flipped upside down, the tray stays where it's supposed to and doesn't slide and push the tops of the miniatures into the lid. The tray has 63 total magnet holes, although not all are needed if you are using larger base miniatures.
The tray is broken up into 4 pieces as I only have a 200mm x 200mm print bed. The base size of the single part is 125mm x 160mm. The assembled base is 250mm x 320mm. You will need to print 4 parts to make 1 tray (2 normal, 2 mirrored). They can then be glued or bolted together. I bolted mine together with (6) m3x16 bolts, (6) m3 nuts, and (12) m3 washers. There are also filament slot guides on 2 sides of all tray parts. You may need to use a 1.75mm to 1.9mm drill bit to clean and open them up a little. Then use small pieces of 1.75mm filament to give extra support between the tray pieces. This also helps in keeping the pieces aligned while gluing/bolting together and while gluing the cork to the bottom. Links for the plastic bins and magnets are below.
The cost of the magnets I needed for 200+ miniatures (need 2 magnets minimum for each miniature - 1 for tray, 1 for miniature) ended up being more than I expected. I have spent so much money buying all the parts of the actual game that it was worth it to me to set up a good storage/transport system. For most people, this design will not be cost effective. I thought I would upload this in case someone could use it.
It wasn't until I wrote this up and added the links that I realized the plastic bins I used are only available at retail Walmart stores. There should be similar sizes available for online purchase.
