This is a replica of the Butter Bot from the show Rick and Morty. It’s as screen-accurate in size and detail as I could make it, and it was machined from aluminum. All of the joints have been designed so the robot is a posable figure for display, or even stop motion animation. I used a variety of techniques to build the butter bot because I wanted to learn, but most of the parts (the arms, hands, head, and body) can be easily fabricated using a CNC router like the Carvey and bent on a vice or brake.
The treads were 3d printed from ninjaflex filament, and the wheels/shoulders/eye were turned on a lathe. If you don’t have access to a lathe, these parts could easily be printed, or created from stacked (and glued/brazed/welded) layers of CNC routed aluminum.
I don’t have a single assembly file for the project, but the files I’ve uploaded here should contain all the plans necessary as individual bits and pieces. The “rough model” file was basically my work document to figure out global sizing, so it’s not very accurate to my final build, but all the other CAD files I’m uploading exist for either CAM and CNC routing, for 3D printing, or as direct reference for hand-machining. I made this before Fusion 360 implemented sheet metal fabrication, so all of the sheet metal parts (1/16” Al) are described in a separate Illustrator document. I’ve also thrown in a few sketches I used while I was working on the lathe, but I have since replaced those with accurate models for the wheels and shoulders in their own files.
To anybody who wants to build one of these: Good luck and I hope you have fun! I loved this project and learned a LOT about many aspects of working with aluminum. It’s a surprisingly intensive build.
I’ve also detailed the build in this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/3PpORrycZG8
And I had some fun teaching myself stop motion animation while making this clip: https://youtu.be/MByi1te9L8U
