i don't get how this belt buckle would hold a belt. ideas anybody? are there some parts missing? or is it unknown?

The belt buckle is not entirely complete. There is a slight bump close to the large hole. An assumption would be that a spike or pin was there and eroded away. One would slide the belt through the large hole and the pin (pointing towards the persons belly) would penetrate holes in the leather. There are very similar belt designs even today.
