Increase the PrintrBot Simple y-axis travel to 160mm AND eliminate string slipping problems by replacing most of the y-axis parts and converting to GT2 belt drive. Twisting and dimensional stiffness better than wood parts even with the 60% increase in travel. Designed to work without modifying any of the original Simple parts so modification can be easily reversed if needed.
Requires 250x100x75 print volume which I was able to do on my simple using thing 215294 with the PrintrBot Simple Metal Print Bed For Build Volume Upgrade.
NOTE - this is for simple with Wooden direct drive extruder - untested with other extruders...

- 10" 8mm rod (McMaster 88625K67) - buy extras for other projects ;)
- 12" 8mm rod
- 1/2 PrintrBot GT2 belt kit (2' belt, 1 gear)
- 2 608 bearings
- 3 3mmx12 socket cap
- 1 3mm nut
- 2.5mm, 3.2mm, 8mm drill
- 3mm tap (optional)
- small (<6mm) coarse square, trianlge or flat file
- heat gun
REALLY BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE - author has only tested models with KISSlicer
print parts. Carrier requires strong/well attached initial layer to minimize curling. BackClamp needs "medium" support all other work with no support
finish carrier parts
-- carrier - drilling out rod and clearance holes (3.2mm). File out square holes
-- bearingPlate - 4 clearance and 2 tap (2.5mm) holes, tap if you have it
-- bearing cap - clearance hole
-- limit switch - 8mm
Disassemble wooden y carrier. Leave extruder parts shown in picture (blue tap is holding nuts in place
lightly heat 8mm carrier holes and insert rods 3/4 of the way as shown in picture
Attach one bearing to plate use 3mmx12 socket caps then remove screws holding y motor. slide gear onto shaft as shown then reattach motor. Attach 2nd
slide rods through bearing in carrier then lightly heat back and front end of rod and slide rods so they are flush with front.
Adjust wire management to work with new extra travel. Be sure to test at bottom and top z travel.
lightly heat front clamp and slide on end of belt. Thread through slot in front mount, under front bearing, around gear and under 2nd bearing then out back slot.
Insert nut and socket cap into backClamp. Pull belt tight and slide backClamp on belt as close to edge as possible. Use screw to increase tension until it is "guitar string" tight
Light heat limit switch and slide onto top rod in desired position
- Fit existing extruder using parts pictured to y carrier plate with 3 screws in back.
