I was hoping you'd say that just running the filament through the sponge and connector has proven to be sufficiently airtight as I'm not sure how to attach pneumatic connectors to the input of my direct-drive extruder. It'd be much less complicated to just skip the connectors and tubing, roll the filament back into the box after printing, and put a cap on the hole.

It is sufficient air tight , dont get me wrong.
But one advantage of a teflon tube is, that the filament dont get stuck on furniture anymore. Thats why I want to add the teflon tubes, not because moisture is entering the storage box.

So no pneumatic connectors? Is this sufficiently airtight?

No problem with air tightness until now.
But nothing keeps you from screwing a 5mm on it and connecting a teflon tube.
As soon as my connectors arrive, i'll test it
