A variety of Abaci for a wide range of teaching purposes.
Unlike regular abaci these designs feature toothed rods so that the beads won't slide or move if the frame is bumped - perfect for young users!
Different bead varieties with optional raised numbering from 0-9 are available: or a more traditional smooth variety is also supplied!
Abacus - 1-Rod
For the younger users: only one rod (for numbers from 0-9) Uses base 5: so use the base-5 beads + blank!
Abacus - 2-Rod
Similar to the single-rod design but with two rods!
Abacus - 2-Rod (Base 10)
Similar to the two-rod design. This is capable of displaying numbers from 0-99 and should be printed with the base-10 beads (the simplest method! What most young pupils learn!)
Abacus - 3-Rod
Same as the single rod - but with a total of 3 rods
Abacus - 4-Rod
Same as the single rod - but with a total of 4 rods
Abacus - 5-Rod
Same as the single rod - but with a total of 5 rods
Abacus - Suan Pan
A traditional Chinese-style abacus known as the "Suan Pan": featuring 13 Rods: designed to be used with the "blank bead" or "bead base 5 + blank" if numbers are required
Abacus - Soroban
A traditional Japanese-style abacus known as the "Soroban": featuring 13 Rods: designed to be used with the "blank bead" or "beads for soroban" if numbers are required
NB this is still a work in progress: a break-apart version is also being designed so it can be printed on smaller printers.
An updated version will also be released in a few hours
1 - Decide which size of abacus you want
2 - Download 1x FRAME file of the required size
3 - Download 1x ROD file of the required style (must match the frame!)
4 - Download 1x BEAD file of the required style (must match frame and rod style!)
1 - Print the FRAME file - you only need ONE per abacus!
2 - How many RODS do you need? This will be specific to the FRAME you chose!
3 - Place a number of RODS side-by-side in the printer interface: you should manage all the rods you need for even the largest abaci. Some printer-programs have auto-spacing which will make things simpler.
4 - Print with or without a raft
5 - How many BEADS do you need? This will be specific to the FRAME you choose!
6 - Place a number of BEADS side-by-side in the printer interface as you did with the rods.
7 - Print with or without a raft
8 - Assemble!
1 - Turn the FRAME over (so the openings are facing up)
2 - Slide the required beads onto each rod BEFORE gluing!
3 - Turning the RODS upside down (with the beads loaded! They won't fall off!) - insert them into the slots on the FRAME. [SEE BELOW FOR WHICH ORDER TO PLACE THE BEADS!]
4 - Glue each ROD into place with a little blob of glue on the slot of the FRAME and wait for it to set
You're ready to go!
NB Any glue will do! I use PVA because it's cheap, plentiful, and water-soluble in case you make a mistake!
This is the order beads are found on the finished board: from the bottom upwards!
All Base5 Abaci (except Soroban-style):
Top: 5, Blank (ensure the blank bead is at the very top of each rod!)
