Hey there, great model, I personally made one over the past couple of weeks but had a question. Is it necessary to have the gears on the rotor and the casing or will the mechanism still work without them?

Comments deleted.

Printed on MakerBot 2X, looks great! The crank handle could be just a hair longer, but i didn't see the DXF for that. Either weay it works and looks great!

ah wow this thing is huge!

Made this on a Mendel, little bit of sanding and it works great.

Then connected it to a Dremel and revved it up to 8000 rpm :)

And of course a video.

Status update: was able to download dxf and import into Corel Draw and with lots of

massaging - it's ready for the laser... about 6 layers then assembly. ;)

You should post a derivative!

Thanks!!!! Anxious to give them a try!!

Would be worth a try... I could then import into Corel... don't need a handle... and it

wouldn't be as thick.. overall.. layers of 1/8" or 1/16" acrylic. and the sun gear would be

thicker and extend through a round hole in the bottom and set into the "handle" which is

just a circular piece with the same gear hole in the middle to "lock" the gear to to "handle".

When the "handle" is rotated, it rotates the sun gear and inturn moves the "triangle"...

and the triangle has a cover over it....

I uploaded some DXFs. Let me know how they work for you.

Great idea! Any chance of posting a DXF, SVG or CDR file for us Laser lovers? I could still

build up a 3D model from stacked acrylic or delrin and fashion a "flat" crank from acrylic on the

back with one simple DXF file... Thx, Gmt

I could probably export the DXF of the outlines of the various shapes. You would have to glue the gear to bottom layer of the housing.

I've never tried exporting DXFs from openscad though.

This is great! I've had my ToM for about a month and this is the first mechanism I've printed that I didn't have to modify in any way (I usually have to trim edges or expand holes, etc). Excellent design that is easily capable of showing how the mechanism works!

Which version did you print? The first one or the second one that had 14 teeth on the stationary gear? If it's the second version, the gear timing is off by a 1/4 tooth. I'm uploading a fixed version...

Of course, I didn't notice until after posting this that there is already one here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:8069http://www.thingiverse.com/thi...

Were you reading my comment on the rotor? http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:13372http://www.thingiverse.com/thi... LOL

I was about to post where's the eccentric shaft, but I see it now! Post pictures when you get it printed!

I saw your comment, after I had started working on it. I was inspired by the blog post here: http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2011/11/04/rx-7-rx-8-rotary-engine-rotor-keychain-by-robk636http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2...
