I used 3/8 X 29/32 springs from Menards. Works great.

Does this also help with a slightly un-level surface? (I mean that the printer sits on, not the build plate)

Not sure to be honest. But ass all springs have equal force, I think it does not compensate for that. How ever, I think your printer table must be really really off for it to affect the print. The gap from nozzle to print is around 0.2mm. So even if you put it at 20 degrees slope, the biggest factor will be gravity on the bed and carriage itself. As long at you have thight belts this should not be a problem eighter. IN THEORY...

Most importent is that your bed is level to the nozzle in all positions. If you have thight belts you should then be good.
