A insert for an R2D2 radar eye. Is 3 inches in diameter so fits perfectly inside a 3d printed r2d2 radar eye.
I couldn't find a ball of the relevant size, so created my own.
Be careful, the back is hollowed out so it will incorporate the curve in the dome behind it. This mean you'll probably need some support to print it - I know I did.
I've supplied the sketchup file in case you want to alter it.
I printed mine at 0.1mm layer height for smoothness.
NOTE: One thing I forgot above, I printed it with a 1mm bead around the edge. This acts as the perfect kind of 'flange' that adapts to any imperfections in the printed radar eye.
Created a sphere in sketchup.
Created a 3" cylinder to intersect with the sphere.
Measured where the cylinder met the sphere.
Deleted the cylinder
Created a plane to intersect the model at the height measured.
Intersected with the sphere.
Cut the sphere at the intersection.
deleted the back of the sphere.
created a void in the back of the cut section.
