I am an engineer from the UK. 5 years ago I bought a Da Vinci 1.0 3D printer as a part birthday present for my son and present for me. It cost over £500 back then but was an bargain compared to everything else on the market. This got me into designing things using Blender and OpenSCAD. Its great that you can encounter a problem and think... I know I can print something to solve that. I have designed and printed light fittings, parts for cat carrier and even car parts that have saved me from expensive repairs. I also love to design and print things for fun. I have printed quiet a few things from Thingyverse and love to browse through the website. It never ceases to amaze me the creativity of some people.
My son is now a very talented designer himself (Don't tell him but he surpassed me long ago) and regularly designs and prints parts for his Airsoft guns. The Da Vince had started to become unreliable and was shifting on layers. Time to replace it I thought. Looking through the options available I spotted the Monoprice Maker Select Plus for half price on Amazon. I little research and I the order was in. I must say I am really impressed with it and I have now had it for 3 weeks and it has not stopped printing. The quality and reliability seems much improved, but the Da Vinci was a forerunner to 3D home printing at an affordable price and did it job well for them 5 years. Lets hope the Monoprice gives the same or better service and by the time I am ready to replace that SLA may be affordable for the home user :)
