The difference is the coils trying to be wound more vs trying to be unwound. My particular spring was not identical to the original poster's spring.
For my spring, I found that it took more torque to wind the coils more than it did to unwind them, thus why it's done the way it is. It tensions the belt as needed and I've not had any problems. Either way, I don't think it matters as long as it provides enough tension.
It seems like you mounted the spring in the wrong way (upside down)...
