Fun story about how the first thing I ever printed was patented.
I have this gig as a cross-disciplinary Scientist for a $16 Billion company (which I super love) because I get to invent things for a living. Most of the time I am a lab coat wearing chemist but a few years back I had one of those "game changer" ideas for a mechanical device. I downloaded Sketchup, converted my 4 axis robot arm to a 3D printer and learned enough about modeling and printing that in a few days created a prototype that was shortly after patented. I now own multiple printers, run both Solidworks and Fusion 360, and have over $100K worth of printers at work.
