Anet A8 W5 clone upgrade to Marlin 2

by jdexter

I have one of the £70 Ebay A8 W5 clones. After sorting out a number of problems such as badly made off connectors, dry joints on motor connectors etc. It seemed to be working reasonably well but had one problem - the Z-axis seemed badly calibrated. It uses M8 screwed rod rather than the buttress thread of the more expensive version. I have now upgraded the firmware to Marlin 2 but the problem persists - If I tell the Z-axis to move 10mm using either the built-in display or Pronterface, the axis only consistently moves 1.5mm. (its not a problem of slipping joints). Before I upgraded, telling it to move 10mm in Pronterface would actually move the Z-axis 10mm so I couldn't understand why the jog move should be different, however, both internal and external commands now have the same result. I tried to alter the 'Default steps' item on Marlin, recompile and upload, but, for some reason, M501 still reports the previous steps per unit so recompiling Marlin does not seem to have changed anything.. Can anyone please tell me what I am missing or offer any other help. Thanks. John

ANET A8 ULTIMATE Upgrade Guide

by petrzmax

Hello my friends!
My name is Artur and I'm a Mechatronic engineer. Over 2 years ago I have got my first 3D Printer - Anet A6. I was upgrading it and when it became almost perfect I have sold it because I got Anycubic I3 Mega for testing. Then I was upgrading I3 mega and I have made upgrade guide. There is a lot of knowledge which may help You get the best 3D printing results. You will find it here: http://bit.ly/2OVbu5Z

After this 2 years of upgrading and testing a lot of 3D printers I have decided to come back and make also Anet upgrade guide for You guys!
You can find this guide here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4113690

I hope that You found this guide useful and Your ANET A8 have become a lot better 3D printer. Have a good day and don't forget to leave a comment if it helped You!

Best regards from Poland,

Best Spool Holder?

by TheAussieGonz

Hi, gurus and siswas alike. I've just taken delivery of a couple of 1kg (2.2lb for the medievals) spools and that has me thinking about:
1) enhancing the supplied spool holder with at least axial inserts / wedges / spindles to create a better fit around the threaded rod
2) creating 608 bearing style runners upon which the spool can free stand
3) creating frame mounted overhead holders

I like the idea of reusing what is supplied as much as possible so (1) seems like a decent minimalist approach. It still takes up extra footprint but the feed can be enhanced when combined with a frame mounted overhead roller guide. For minimal footprint, the overhead spool holder seems ideal but that's a worrisome bit of excess weight on the acrylic frame.

Opinions, advice, recommendations?

Anet a8 mainboard

by Maisonm

So I recently fried the stock mainboard on my anet a8. I then purchased a mks gen l board and get it all hooked up but there is one problem with it. Only 1 z axis motor works and a few others only move in one direction and I am tired of messing with it and trying to figure out how to make it work. So my question is, what board should I get? I have an auto level sensor that i would like to hook up but have no idea what board i should get and am done messing with the one i have. Any links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Quality 16T Idlers?

by JTsVerse

Anyone have a source for QUALITY 16t idlers? I'm tired of bearing failures and gears with too much run out (out of round).

Should I just print my own and get some mr62-zz bearings? I was thinking of putting 3 bearings in them.
