2019 Update: Removal of Things from GunCAD Things list

by IVIUPPET

Happy 2019 y'all!

I have not uploaded or participated in this group in a while as I adjusted into a new phase of my career. I intend to change that, now that I am getting used to it.

It looks like not much has changed here on the Thingiverse side, but I see a lot of enthusiasts have joined this Thingiverse Group and shared their 3D designs. This is awesome! I cannot emphasize this enough, but it is not the main purpose of this post.

Unfortunately, I see a lot of 'spam': things that are placed here to get views (?) or, at first it seemed like an attempted troll of the group.

GunCAD was casually created for like-minded individuals to save time when developing designs or sharing ideas for commonly owned products to enhance the experience with them, by connecting such individuals by 'genre', while also not getting banned by the openly anti-gun practices and beliefs of many citizens of Thingiverse's home state of New York, just for posting information.

Anyway, since Thingiverse has not added features to make their subforums that much more valuable (hey, they were fighting the backlash from their gen3 printer feedback, and I don't have to manage a website, so I'll cut them some slack), I have no way to delegate administrative privileges to anyone, so I must remove these spam objects before they tarnish the group and diminish the experience/brand, being the sole arbiter of what constitutes an allowed object. There is also no way to repeal a deletion. This rubs me the wrong way from a diversity/inclusion standpoint, and, someone has generally done some work that may be useful to someone else, and published it for free. I welcome this, open source/GNU, and any kind of repurposing or alternate use that could be added value to the community as a whole, but a group needs focus to carve out a space for its existance. I also just don't like the idea of myself having the only say in anything.

Unfortunately, you have to draw the line somewhere.

This group was created for:

  • firearms parts (except United States legally considered firearms, i.e. complete receivers)
  • firearms accessories/gear
  • parts that will work on or inspire the design of firearms, parts, or accessory related CAD models
  • firearms enthusiast/swag/motivation/if_you_dont_fit_in_this_catchall_idk

All others may be removed from this group (but of course remain on Thingiverse). I have reluctantly decided the AK cookie cutters are cool, every now and then. ;)

It would be cool if you could search for parts within this group, and return a more refined list than the spam, untested crap part epidemic that is the rest of Thingiverse -- to find that thing that can be made on your 3D printer instead of ordering, and waiting for one to ship online from some other supplier, with some other manufacturing technique and strategy for their product.

Shoutout to the airsoft crowd:
I have seen a lot of airsoft parts come in here and elsewhere in the Thingiverse, and LOVE the enthusiasm from this group, even if their designs don't always survive the durability cycles of powder-propulsion recoil -- I still try them from time to time and try to post a Make! But, please, design your parts to spec AND TEST THEM (or indicate that you have not tested the part much/at all, and put [WIP] at the beginning of your Thing's title, github style (I think Thingiverse has a checkbox for in-progress too)). I am happy to help test if I am equipped, or can readily purchase something useful to us both. I live for this shit. There are many active users here who may be able to help too, but they are not your employees; don't expect them to be. We can save us all some trouble and Google or try to design ourselves before asking for parts or answers, but if you offer some incentive, it's a free market, right?

If your thing was removed and you think it should be there, I apologize, please message me or try to re-add to the group without me noticing. I hope the majority of users welcome these updates, and great work to everyone who has made this area a good place in cyberspace to be. I've seen some really cool stuff I've never even considered, thought of, or seen anywhere since the conception of some way to centralize all of us many years ago. It's really, really cool, and I'm happy some banhappy, gun grabbing admin has not struck down all this stuff, or we have not gotten into any patent litigation lawsuit for this or really any other 'genre's 3d printed product accessories, and we can just feely share ideas, designs, and try to fabricate ideas into useful parts for our favorite toys using our cheap in-house manufacturing machines. I hope it stays that way, but who knows what the future holds. There is value in communication and collaboration as a group, and I hope we can all gain from this and 3d print freely forever.

Until next time.... Thanks for reading.

Red Dot Sight Mount for Glock

by plokij0802

Hey guys, I have a glock 17 and I'd like to add a red dot, but I don't like the slide mounted version...
I saw this model and I find it good, more stable than the ones available on thingiverse.
https://www.amazon.fr/Mako-groupmako-Glock-Tactical-Support/dp/B0010DQ21M
https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015/10/13/big-3-east-alg-defense-rmr-6-second-mount/
Does anybody know how to design one?
thanks guys!
