Print, without supports: Container x1 Barrel x1 pins x1 BarrelTopStop x1 BarrelTopStopShroud x1 TopPin x3 GlyphRing x8 Tumbler x8 EndCap x2 (optional) -------------------------------------------------------- Simple instructions: To set password, line up the notch in the Tumblers with the desired character on each GlyphRing. Line up the rings on the Barrel to spell out the password when aligned with the arrow. Put the BarrelTopStop on top of the rings so the holes align with those in the Barrel and insert the TopPins to hold it in place. Put the BarrelTopStopShroud over the BarrelTopStop and TopPins to hide them. Insert the Pins into the groove in the container with the final pin which overhangs the edge of the main body sitting at the open end of the container. -------------------------------------------------------- Detailed instructions: Remove any stringing and artefacts from the inside of GlyphRngs, and the outside and inside of Tumblers Insert tumblers into glyph ring so the raised sections on the outer edge of tumblers goes into slots in glyph rings. Insert so that the square notch lines up with the desired letter/number of the password for the given location. Place ring onto barrel, with the correct character for that position aligned with the arrow so the slots align internally. Repeat for all rings. Cryptex should now show the desired password with the characters correctly oriented when the base of the barrel is on the left. Place BarrelTopStop on top of the rings so the slots and holes align with those in the barrel. Insert pins into holes. They should protrude slightly outside the top stop ring, but be flush or lower internally. The pins may require light sanding or filing to seat perfectly. If the pins will not go in because the BarrelTopStop is sitting too high, lightly file or sand the top and bottom of each ring to make them slghtly shorter. Replace rings in the correct order after doing so. After pins are seated, slot the BarrelTopStopShroud over the top, with the grooves in the shroud lining up with the tips of the pins. Try inserting the container into the barrel. If it does not move smoothly, try sanding the outside of the container to make it smoother. Remove the container. Insert the pins into the slot in the container, with final pin which overhangs the edge of the main body sitting at the open end of the container. The smaller section of the main section of the pinsshould slot into the hole in the base. The pins may require light sanding or filing to seat correctly. Gluing should not be necessary, as the pins are a tight fit. It is normal for the main body of the pins to not be flush with the container, to help it move smoothly. Rotate rings so the chosen password is displayed, and insert container (which can contain the secret message or item). Scramble the rings to lock it. Rotate the rings to spell out the chosen password to unlock it, and pull the container out. Optional: Glue endcaps onto closed ends of barrel and container for aesthetic appeal. --------------------------------------------- To change the password: Unlock cryptex and remove container. Remove BarrelTopStopShroud. Push in pins (which is why the tips protrude slightly) and remove them. Remove BarrelTopStop. Remove rings. Lift Tumbler out of glyph ring to allow it to rotate. Align notch with desired character. Reseat tumbler in glyph ring. Slide rings back onto barrel in correct order. Replace BarrelTopStop, pins, and Shroud. The cryptex has now been reprogrammed! ---------------------------------------------- This cryptex has 8 rings, each with 36 characters. This equates to over 2.8211099 x10^12 combinations, or over 2,821,099,000,000, or over 2.8 trillion (thousand billion, or million million) combinations. Trying one combination a second, it would take over 89,395 years to try every combination.
